Santa Maria di Cerrate: The Rebirth of a Salentine Masterpiece
A Monument Restored to the Community
For a long time, this 12th-century treasure, built in the iconic local pietra leccese, remained a "hidden" monument, preserved but not fully valued. The turning point came in 2012, when the Province of Lecce entrusted the complex to the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) through a 30-year concession, making it the first FAI property in Puglia.
This partnership has led to a meticulous recovery of the site, turning it into a beacon for cultural tourism in Puglia. Since its reopening, the abbey has welcomed thousands of visitors, thanks to a strategic blend of professional management and effective communication. In 2026, the restoration continues with the goal of preserving its historical and artistic value while enhancing the cultural and tourism offering of the Salento area.
A Legendary Foundation
Legend has it that the abbey was founded by the Norman king Tancred of Altavilla, Count of Lecce, who, during a hunting trip, saw the image of the Virgin Mary appear between the antlers of a deer (from which the name "Cerrate" or "Cervate" derives). Historically, however, its origins date back to the early 12th century, when Bohemond of Altavilla, son of Robert Guiscard, established a cenobio of Greek monks following the rule of St. Basil. For centuries, it was one of the most important monastic centers in southern Italy, complete with a scriptorium and a library.
In 1531, the complex passed under the control of the Ospedale degli Incurabili of Naples, which transformed it into a farm (masseria) dedicated to olive cultivation and processing. The sack by Turkish pirates in 1711 plunged the abbey into a state of abandonment, which continued until the first restoration by the Province of Lecce in 1965.
What to See: Between History and Rural Life
The restoration has not only preserved the church but has breathed new life into the entire complex:
- The Church: A Romanesque jewel from the 12th century, famous for its carved portals, 13th-century portico with figured capitals, and precious Byzantine frescoes dating from the 12th to 14th centuries. The extensive use of lapis lazuli blue in the frescoes testifies to the high artistic value of the site.
- The House of the Massaro: Once the heart of the estate's agricultural management, it now serves as a welcoming point with a ticket office and bookshop.
- The Monastic House: Restored to host educational services and a cafeteria, where visitors can reflect on the site's long history.
- The Olive Press and Well: Traces of the ancient oil activity are still visible, including two underground olive mills and a 16th-century well in Lecce stone.
