What is a Masseria?
The term Masseria (or Massaria) originates from the Latin word massa, meaning a "cluster" or "union". Historically, these were massive, structurally complex buildings characterized by a closed courtyard.
The life of the Masseria revolved around the Massaro—the farm manager appointed by the Dominus (be it a feudal lord, the Church, or the Crown) to oversee the lands, livestock, and labor.
The Historical Evolution: Protection and Power
The history of the Masseria is a fascinating timeline of adaptation:
- Ancient Roots: Many stand on the remains of Roman villas or 13th-century monastic holdings.
- Regional Differences: In the Bari area, Masserie are expansive complexes with housing for laborers. In Salento, they are typically smaller, more compact structures of a few large rooms, often lacking worker quarters.
- Modern Elegance: During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, these buildings were often remodeled into grand manor houses with ornate decorations.
- Fortification: Between the 15th and 19th centuries, the threat of pirate raids led to the rise of Fortified Masserie. These included pyrgoi (watchtowers) built to spot enemies from the sea.

In Salento, the agricultural vocation remains strong, and the landscape is dotted with these "stone giants". While many have been transformed into luxury boutique hotels or private celebrity villas, plenty of original, untouched examples remain.
Even though most original structures are private property and cannot be toured inside for safety reasons, their imposing presence against the red soil and blue sky is a sight to behold.
