The history of the Feudi di Guagnano winery is a fairly recent story that tells of a dream and an entrepreneurial mission.

In the early 2000s, many vineyards in Guagnano’s area were abandoned by the new generations. To the hard peasant life, young people preferred different and economically more stable jobs. Thus, in a short time, centuries of peasant wisdom and traditions called for completely lost.

In 2002 Gianvito, Carlo and Franco, grandchildren of those same indefatigable winemakers, decided instead to reverse the trend. Moved by the passion for viticulture and love for their territory, they decided to invest in the wine sector.

After having rescued the ancient Negroamaro vineyards belonging to our ancestors from abandonment, they began to write a new story giving life to the “Feudi di Guagnano” winery.

The winery’s name Feudi derives from the word fiéu which in the Salento dialect means rural district. The district was the grouping of all the vineyards, large and small that were part of the Lord and feudatory master of Guagnano.

These small and large parcels of land cultivated with an Apulian sapling, with plants between 20 and 80 years old, make up all of the company’s legacy. From this are produced the precious bunches that will be used to produce great wines made in Salento.

Guagnano has always been linked to Negroamaro’s production. In choosing the name Feudi di Guagnano, this strong bond is reaffirmed, as is the desire to represent a unique territory. This concept is strengthened also in the choice of the logo that incorporates a votive image dear to the territory.

The logo of the company is, in fact, a particular “Madonna and Child” represented in one of the frescoes of the matrix church of the Guagnano’s Municipality.

To date, the annual production consists of about 200,000 bottles, divided among 15 labels where Negroamaro is the master with its red wines of great body, structure and tannins.

A company that starts with safeguarding the traditional heritage of Salento’s viticulture, but that is technologically and commercially projected towards the future.

Among the labels, Nero di Velluto 2012, a 100% Negroamaro, stands out. Characterized by an intense ruby red colour, Nero di Velluto is an enveloping wine with complex but measured aromas; a wine with warm and velvety tones in the mouth, with spicy notes of black pepper, tobacco and cocoa.

Nero di Velluto has a limited production of about 10,000 bottles a year, all hand-numbered, obtained only in the best years from bunches selected by hand from a 1935 vineyard. A wine in which the strength and power of Negroamaro are balanced with balance and elegance.

A precious wine that won the award in 2017 “5 grappoli di Bibenda”.
