Italy is a country with a mild climate, therefore it can be visited pleasantly all year round. Whether you love art, nature or Italian food, in every season you can see and appreciate the different nuances of this multi-faceted country. Furthermore, so much difference and variety allow you to return to Italy and visit different places in different seasons to really appreciate this wonderful country.

Autumn in Italy

The mild temperatures at this time of year allow you to visit Italy with a more manageable climate for those who suffer extremely from this country’s summer heat. The landscape changes its colours and the climate divides the long and narrow Italian peninsula into two. This way you will find yourself able to have the first snow in Northern Italy and be able to enjoy beautiful days by the sea with a pleasant sun in Southern Italy.

Walking between villages and cities will certainly be more pleasant than in summer when temperatures in Italy are really high and the heat makes every walk difficult. This is indeed an excellent reason to know the hinterland of the territories. It’s also a good time to use some time inside museums, churches and (we’d say especially) wineries!

As you know, in Italy the table is the main place for hospitality and conviviality. In autumn, with the shortest days and the cool of the evening, you will be very happy to stay at the table to taste the typical Italian products or in a bar to taste an Italian coffee accompanied by excellent local pastries.

Moreover, in this period tourism is in low season. This means that you will be able to find excellent rates for flights and hotels and allow yourself a greater number of local experiences. You can take advantage of some free days in the museums (which in this period are less crowded) and even hotels, holiday farms, etc. are used to propose very interesting packages that will allow you to extend your holiday in Italy by a few days.

1st of November 2nd of November in Italy are public holidays. On 1st of November in Italy, is known as “Oggnissanti” (All Saints Day) is celebrated, a civil and religious feast that involves the whole country and work activities. So be careful, many shops and businesses may be closed. For this holiday you can meet many religious celebrations, some with very ancient origins dating back to the Middle Ages. Most of the holidays are food and wine, so it will certainly be a pleasant discovery to participate!

2nd of November in Italy is the day dedicated to one’s death (All Souls Day). It is a religious but not civil festival. In addition to the commemoration of their deceased loved ones, it is typical to prepare on this day typical sweets for the holidays. You will not find it difficult to taste some of them in the city’s pastry shops.

Vacation in southern Italy in the fall. Puglia

In southern Italy, autumn is an extremely mild season. In general, foreigners are able to swim in the sea even until the end of November, as the temperature of the Mediterranean sea is generally warmer than the ocean. The activities that can be done vary greatly from region to region. For example, you can participate in the mushroom picking in Umbria and in the chestnut harvest in Calabria.

The south is rich in cultural and scenic beauty and the weather this season will allow you to visit them in complete tranquillity and relaxation.

November to Puglia and Salento

The weather in Puglia in November is characterized by a warm sun and a few spots of rain. The temperature varies a lot between the north and the south of Puglia; in the north, you can have cooler temperatures, while in the south the cold will be absolutely tolerable with normal winter clothing.

Daytime temperatures vary between 57 and 64 ° F, but being in the sun it is not uncommon to perceive many more and take off your jacket even this season. But you might be surprised by a sudden storm, so it’s always good to have an umbrella with you if the day is grey.

November in Salento is still a pleasant month to spend a lot of time outdoors. So hiking, trekking, seaside walks or boat trips are still pleasant activities to liven up your holidays. The temperature here is between 64 and 68 ° F. You will have long enough days to enjoy, as the sun rises at about 6.30 am and sets at around 5.10 pm.

There are numerous food and wine festivals in Puglia that enliven the towns and villages. Certainly the most important ones are those related to the feast of 11 November, is known as St Martin day (San Martino). During this festival wine and chestnuts are the protagonists, in particular, the red wine (vino novello).

Things to do in Salento in the fall

What other activities can you do in Puglia and in Salento in the fall? Here are some ideas:
